About the OII Landfill Site
The former Operating Industries, Inc. (OII) landfill site is a United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund site, located adjacent to the 60 Freeway between Monterey Park and Montebello, California. The 190-acre site consists of two parcels, the smaller parcel located on the north side ("North Parcel") and the larger parcel on the south side ("South Parcel") of the freeway. (Click here for an aerial view.)
New Cure, Inc. (NCI) manages, monitors, and maintains the long-term clean up of the OII site on behalf of a number of companies that have settled with EPA and agreed to implement the remedies. This work is conducted on behalf of a cooperating group of companies who perform the remediation. EPA provides direction and oversight for remediation.
The South Parcel remedy includes an earthen cover landscaped with California grasses. This cover, along with a control and treatment system for landfill gas and leachate, continues to protect the public and environment. Wildlife has returned to OII, which now hosts an abundance of songbirds, rabbits, hawks and butterflies. Looking to the future, NCI continues to explore ways to improve the aesthetics and operations, and to keep the nearby community informed of our progress.
The North Parcel is a 45-acre site within the redevelopment zone of Monterey Park and planned for a retail shopping center. NCI is working closely with the development team on the pending sale, site preparation and re-use of the former industrial and landfill site for community benefit.
